Using a piping bag is relatively simple, although it may take some practice to master the technique.- Preparing the piping bag: place the desired nozzle in the lower end of the piping bag. Fold over the top of the piping bag a few turns, so that the bag is closed and your filling cannot escape.
- Filling the piping bag: Hold the piping bag in one hand and fold the top edge outwards. Carefully scoop the filling, such as buttercream, crème fantastique or crème patisserie in the piping bag with a spatula or spoon until about two-thirds full. Push the filling down towards the nozzle as much as possible.
- Close the piping bag: Twist the top of the piping bag firmly around the filling. Squeeze your fingers above the nozzle to remove any air bubbles and push the filling down evenly.
- Placing the filling: Hold the piping bag firmly in one hand, and use your other hand to guide the top of the piping bag. Apply light pressure to the top of the piping bag to make the filling come through the nozzle evenly.
- Decorating: Move the piping bag with even pressure to create the desired decorative patterns or shapes on your pastry or dessert. Rotate the piping bag for round shapes such as rosettes and keep it straight for clean lines.
- Finish: When you have finished piping, release the pressure on the piping bag by flipping the top open again. If necessary, cut off the filling with a knife or scissors.
